Midterm Post – ‘Daja’s Adventure’

This is a little adventure game called ‘Daja’s Adventure’ where the player has to help Daja, the fictional character, to find a powerful gem inside a volcano. There are three scenes where the player solves three different problems. For example:

  • In the first scene, the player has to help Daja to move the bricks that are blocking the entrance to the volcano and find a small button to go to the next scene.

shot1  (Scene 1 – Forest)

  • Or in the third scene where Daja has to unlock the chest that is full of gems and has to find the most powerful ‘lively’ gem in order to complete her adventure.

shot2  (Scene 3 – Chest of Gems)

These types of mini-puzzles are usually in various mystery games. As big gamer, I have tried to use few simple examples from other games and place them onto my small interactive narrative. This little game is more likely to be played by children from ages 4-9, as it is short and simple.

I have drawn digitally on Adobe Photoshop on tablet for most of the scenes. I have also used several stock photos from the Internet and modified them to match the theme of the story.

Overall, I find this interactive narrative moderate. I had expected that I would be able to place more interaction. However, I had encountered several technical problems therefore I had to keep it simpler than I wanted to.

I SPY midterm post

For the midterm Assignment, I decided to do a narrative story/game inspired by the books I SPY.

Roy the character needs the viewers help to find objects in his desk, and kitchen to be able to go to school, in class Roy also needs help finding a few items within his classroom. Each location has a variety of things to find from ladybugs rulers, crayon, scissors, teacup, plates and kiddy pools. Each item when found and clicked turns yellow reminding the user he/she already found it, this was a personal decision when I was younger I remember I used to get frustrated I had no idea what things I had already found. This game aims to ages 10 and older the illustrations welcome younger people but some of the objects are harder to find than others so any age is appropriate, everyone likes a challenge. I used photography and illustration to create this one of a kind ISPY then combined them all in processing using codes from references, books, and research.

Over all I am very impressed with what I was able to accomplish with only a semester worth of processing classes. In the future I would like to push this idea further and create more and exciting effects.

PLANET PRO

Planet Protista, also called affectionally by some or for mer ambition by others as PRO. PRO is home to a big kingdom where Amebas (also spelled amoebas) are part of. Amebas have a very high level of consciousness, their intro-dimensional and very psychic ability let them  communicate with everything in their planet, as other dimensional beings through thought and emotions. Aliens from another planet have grown intrest on this pure beings air max 90 cheapest price. Their intrest is such they’ve left satellites orbiting planet PRO. Such satellites beside receiving information they send microwave signals that drop concepts and ideas the amebas aren’t aware off yet. When this ideas are conceived beings tend to cut spiritual consciousness and create separate reality on its own. So, what this means, is that beings stop being a unity perception of oneness but a duality perception of twoness. AND THIS IS BAD!

Your job is to send comments  as projectiles into the satellites, if you miss you’ll hit planet PRO.  But hey! just know Amebas are willing to accept any fait.

Midterm Post: The Mysterious Case of Ringing Rocks

My Midterm project was inspired by Ringing Rocks State Park in Pennsylvania. The rocks in the park made unusual ringing noises when hit correctly. There is no exact reason as to why or what causes them to do this, some say that they are “alien rocks”. After visiting it over summer, I grew interested in the idea of Aliens creating these rocks. When the project was assigned I thought that using processing to create my own sci-fi fiction interactive narrative would be a great idea. I began the project by creating my characters, rocks, and spaceship by using illustrator. I then created all four scenes separately and later combined them all together with navigation. Although I was not able to add sounds and other elements we have not learned, I am happy with what I was able to create.

Image Manipulator Tool

As a photographer that continuously tries to expand the boundaries of the field, I am always exploring ways to collaborate different mediums with photography.  This image manipulation tool will incorporate programming with photography. This tool is used to manipulate a photograph in seven different methods and to use these manipulated images for digital collages on Photoshop.  The seven different manipulations are as follows:

  1. Draws horizontal strips of lines along each row with the average color of the row.
  2. Draws vertical strips of lines along each column with the average color of each column.
  3. Draws horizontal strips of lines with colors from the column of the image with the most variety of shades.
  4. Draws vertical strips of lines with colors from the row of the image with the most variety of shades.
  5. Draws the image with big mosaic boxes.
  6. Draws the image with medium sized mosaic boxes.
  7. Draws the image with small sized mosaic boxes.

Then the user can save the manipulated images as individual image files (TIFF) by clicking on the save button.  The images will be saved with logical identifiable names.

There is a menu with descriptions, the preview of each manipulation, and the save button at the bottom of the screen.

Note that the images on the display are purposely resized to fit the screen, and the dimensions of the saved images are untouched.

Midterm Final

‘ HELPING SPOOF! ‘

For the midterm task, I chose to create an interactive called ‘Helping Spoof’.

‘Helping Spoof’ acts as an interactive narrative game for children aged approximately 4 to 7 years old. The idea of creating this game was largely influenced by the interactive, ‘Vector Park’ and the television program, ‘Blues Clues.’ The game therefore revolves around a dog, being ‘Spoof’ himself, who needs the user’s help to complete certain tasks before he goes out on his daily walk.

The tasks include interactive opportunities such as, feeding Spoof, finding his collar and bone, and helping him find his way back home. The user is therefore able to interact with the character’s environment and complete the various educational tasks that emphasizes on factors such as, practicality, colour and size.

Since the game is aimed at a younger target audience, the tasks are made to be appropriate for that age group in particular. Each stage includes simple instructions telling the user what to do in order to proceed to the next stage.

The objects and illustrations on each stage were created through the use of Adobe Illustrator. These drawings were further given life through the use of Processing, which allowed the interactive capabilities in the game.

All in all the game was much like what I had hoped to achieve. The aesthetics and interactivity were well fulfilled during the creation of this game, largely allowing me to display the set of skills that we have learned in these past few weeks of Creative Computing.

Midterm Review Post

Looking back on the narrative project I developed for the midterm, I gathered much of my inspiration from my youth and the time I spent playing video games. I pulled resources and inspiration from games such as Resident evil as well TV shows The Walking Dead. My goal from the beginning was to create a different type of experience that would rely on the user’s actions and experiences to navigate them through the simple “multi level” game.  Even though I had limited skills and resources I wanted to make the experience for the user come first hand, and the way I attempted to achieve this was through making it a first person “shooter.”  It would begin with a simple instructions page which would lay out the basic story line telling them they were trapped in a house with zombies, and the only way to make it out would be by killing all of them. Once they had read through and clicked to proceed it would take them to a simple weapons menu which borrowed artwork and stylistic elements from Resident evil. They would only be presented with the choice of the hand gun, and after the selection would be made they would continue onto the first level. It was after this that the game relied on the user to progress onto the next level and ultimately to the exit to end the game.

The Photos that i chose above are from the initial home screen as well as the dining room level. Here you can see the elements that i incorporated from the Resident Evil games as well as the zombies on the home page which were inspired from The Walking Dead.

Midterm: Gypsy Shop Adventures

The task was to create an interactive narrative using the program, Processing, which required four pages to tell the story.  I was inspired by one of the storylines in The Simpsons Tree House Horror XII, where the family visits a gypsy and gets cursed after Homer ruins her shop.  With hand drawn illustrations I wanted to create a playful spin on the story that involved the user as the main character.  It begins outside of the gypsy’s shop, as the black cat slowly crosses your path to intimidate you, the user, to not go any further.  If you do chose to continue the user would click the door.  The next page shows the inside of the shop, filled with many objects and creatures that move on their own.  Some of these actions include cockroaches on the floor moving, the flickering light of the candles, the potion set that glows as the mouse moves, the spider that moves up and down its web, and lastly the shrunken head who’s eyes follow the mouse.  On the table is a crystal ball with a sign reading “DO NOT TOUCH”, if the user chooses to click the ball it leads to the next scene showing a figure, representing the user, stuck inside the crystal ball.  If the user moves the mouse of the figure it moves side to side as if it’s in a panic trying to get out. The only way to break out of the crystal ball is to click it with the mouse.  When doing so the final slide shows an angry gypsy with text saying “YOU BROKE MY CRYSTAL BALL!!!” to the right of her and a broken crystal ball in the background.  The scene has a strobe effect to it to show her rage. If you click anywhere on the page the scene goes back to the beginning for the viewer to go through the story again.

A Tale of Two Doors

For my Creative Computing midterm I made an interactive choose your own adventure program. The user is promoted with a story about how they must get  home from an unknown place they have awakened in by choosing one of two doors that are floating before them.Throughout the program the user has the possibility of encountering 16 different screens, each illustrating a different place they have been taken to on the way to their desired destination. Depending on which door the user chooses they will also have a different story. In some the user will not be able to continue on  because they have chosen a door that will take them to their “death.” In this case the narrative ends and the user is told that because they chose that path they have died. Depending on which “death screen” they are shown a different story will be given. In one they are shown a field that they may or may not have been in before, but this time there is a scary man in the distance holding what seems to be a knife with blood on it. The program was inspired by the way one’s life can take a sudden drastic and unfortunate change depending on certain simple decisions. The same idea is used in the map that I made for where each choice would take you deliberately involves the user being doubled back to different points.

13

These are two examples of screens that the user would be prompted with while using the program. I used Illustrator to create each background and the doors the user chooses from. I was inspired to make the backgrounds I made because of a convoluted travel experience I had once involving some of these places.
