A Tale of Two Doors

For my Creative Computing midterm I made an interactive choose your own adventure program. The user is promoted with a story about how they must get  home from an unknown place they have awakened in by choosing one of two doors that are floating before them.Throughout the program the user has the possibility of encountering 16 different screens, each illustrating a different place they have been taken to on the way to their desired destination. Depending on which door the user chooses they will also have a different story. In some the user will not be able to continue on  because they have chosen a door that will take them to their “death.” In this case the narrative ends and the user is told that because they chose that path they have died. Depending on which “death screen” they are shown a different story will be given. In one they are shown a field that they may or may not have been in before, but this time there is a scary man in the distance holding what seems to be a knife with blood on it. The program was inspired by the way one’s life can take a sudden drastic and unfortunate change depending on certain simple decisions. The same idea is used in the map that I made for where each choice would take you deliberately involves the user being doubled back to different points.

These are two examples of screens that the user would be prompted with while using the program. I used Illustrator to create each background and the doors the user chooses from. I was inspired to make the backgrounds I made because of a convoluted travel experience I had once involving some of these places.

Description: I got the story Idea of searching for family from finding Nemo, because it is my favorite movie, and I also recently did a short video project on it for another class. It starts off with a sad lonely watermelon in the kitchen. When you click on him, a thought bubble appears, showing an image of him and his family – his wife strawberry and his son grape. When you click on the thought bubble, a box appears below, which tells you that watermelon’s family was kidnapped by the evil vegetable family from next door – potato, his wife beetroot, and his son brocolli. Watermelon has to go rescue his family. In the next scene, he is at the backyard of his house. There are rocks blocking his way from the neighbor’s house, which have to be dragged and dropped to clear his way. Once the way is clear, he can be dragged to the door and taken into the neighbor’s house. The third scene is in the neighbor’s house. He encounters the evil vegetable family, who has his wife and son. There is a knife which you have to use to chop the evil vegetable family in order to rescue his son and his wife.

“Roy” A Short Story

Roy is average and has a normal office job. This is a story of Roy’s simple day and how he unexpectedly saves a child’s life. The tone of the plot is not exciting; I wanted to keep it as bland as life can be. I drew these digitally and used only black and white allowing the viewer to focus more on what is happening. I aimed for an illustrative “sketchy” look because I felt it added to the emptiness of the compositions. The user does nothing more than progress the story.

Introduction

screen_grab_1This is how the viewer is introduced to Roy. The ringing alarm is made of two images alternating at a certain frame rate – everything else in the composition remains static.
